Friday – The Round Up and Journey Home
With the Left and Right Banks fully tasted we traditionally use Friday as an opportunity to visit one of our key suppliers to re-taste wines that needed one more viewing and to taste for the first time those wines where the opportunity didn’t present itself throughout the week.

Thursday – The Right Bank
The early starts were becoming somewhat the norm as we arose to darkness in order to make the long journey over the river for our 9am rendezvous at Chateau Pavie. Having digested the press prior to our arrival in Bordeaux and hearing the whispers from other merchants on the circuit about the relative strength of the Right Bank appellations we were all looking forward to seeing for ourselves.

Wednesday is the day we go south to the much under appreciated Graves and Pessac-Léognan region. The struggle of another early start was offset by the thought of tasting at our first appointment at Château Haut Brion.

Tuesday – UGC Tastings and Châteaux Visits
With the majority of our Châteaux visits in the Médoc under our belt we had a much clearer understanding for how the top estates in this region had coped with the difficult growing season of the vintage. Tuesday presents the turn of the Châteaux belonging to the Union des Grands Cru.

Monday – Châteaux Visits in the Medoc
This year’s Monday presented an earlier rise than normal in order to get to one of the most northern properties in the Médoc for our 8am tasting at Calon Segur. Monday is traditionally the day where we make the vast majority of our Châteaux visits on the left bank and this year was no different.

Sunday – We’ve Arrived!
As we gathered in the departure lounge waiting for our flight to Bordeaux there was the usual anticipation for the week ahead not just with ourselves but also with the 50 or so other UK merchants that made up the majority of the passengers on the flight. A chance to say hello to fellow colleagues and discuss our thoughts and expectations for the week ahead.

Bordeaux here we come
It’s hard to believe that a full year has passed since our last En Primeur season but it is that time of year again and with our week ahead’s schedule fully booked with Chateaux visits, James, Neil, Matthew and myself are heading off to Bordeaux to taste the latest instalment in the Bordeaux En Primeur saga, the 2012 vintage.
